By Jack D A Brown

If you are looking to start golf or are fairly new to the game and want to get off on the right foot with your fellow golfers then there are a couple of very important golf putting etiquette rules that you need to be aware of.

These golf putting etiquette rules below are not actually written down in the rule book but are, or should be acknowledged amongst all players as being part of the games accepted etiquette rules when on the putting green.

The first and most important putting etiquette rule is DO NOT walk on any of your playing partner’s line of putt! This is an absolute no no, and will be frowned upon intensely! The line of putt is the area between where the ball lies and the hole, it also includes a reasonable distance either side of this line, but not beyond the hole.

So if you arrive on the putting green and your ball is on the other side of the green, make sure that you walk around your playing partners balls to get to it and not across any of their lines.

If you are furthest away from the hole and so it is your turn to putt, the golf putting rules state that once you have made the putt you can either decide to mark the ball or putt out. However, it is putting etiquette to mark the ball if you are consequently going to be standing on someone’s line of putt to finish the hole.

Another very important golf putting etiquette rule is to avoid distracting your playing partner when they are putting. This means that you should keep still, quiet and stand in a position that is not in their line of sight.

You may well have a putt that is on a similar line to your partners and would like to stand behind them to see how their ball reacts on the green, this is definitely against golf putting etiquette rules and should be avoided at all costs, by all means have a walk round to see the line once they have made their putt.
