6 Hot New Golf Drivers Available

Now that the golf season is almost here for most of us, I do believe it’s a great time to reflect on a number of the hot new golf driver available. This discussion will not be designed as an in-depth analysis of all the new drivers available on the market, but look at some who thought we were worthy to take in more detail, if you’re in the market. As usual, a lot of companies are promoting their hot new golf drivers now, so let’s look at a few.

PING G15
Ping uses an external weight pad is located in the rear sole to hit the ball high and with low spin. Rather than reducing the weight of the club head, they placed the center of gravity in the shaft closer to the handle end of the club. Golfers who have used it like its stable feel and call it very forgiving.

CALLAWAY DIABLO OCTANE
Using a lightweight carbon-fiber crown, they reduced the weight of the clubhead to just 195 grams. The head still has a low center of gravity, despite its light weight and lightweight shaft, thereby promoting greater swing speed. Golfers who have tried this club have found its combination of distance and forgiveness as its main benefit.

NIKE VR PRO
It has a thin crown to save weight, a hosel that allows for 32 adjustable settings and a variable thickness cupface to improve off-center hits. The adjustable hosel is much less noticeable in this year’s edition. It has a very strong sound and feel.

TAYLORMADE BURNER SUPERFAST 2.0
Their philosophy is to help golfers generate clubhead speed through a lightweight club. A shaft of 48 grams gives the club a total weight of less than 280 grams. A sloping crown and low sole push the center of gravity low for higher launch with less spin. Golfers who use it say it’s long off the tee, but very forgiving.

COBRA S3 MAX DRIVE
This driver is designed for mid-handicap and high-handicapped golfer. Cobra uses an elliptical face and bevelled perimeter, producing a larger sweet spot (about 30% larger), which they believed to better reflect the profile of miss-hit the average golfer.

TITLEIST 910D2
The 16 adjustable parameters of the hosel allow the club’s loft angle and lie to be manipulated independently. This optimizes launch conditions for each player. It has a crown thinner than previous Titleist drivers, which helps lower the center of gravity. Reviewers liked the club’s adjustability factor.

As mentioned previously, these hot new golf drivers available on the market are not all that are there this year. However, it gives a representative sample of what some of the largest golf club manufacturers have to offer. Therefore, it appears that the new crop this year has something to offer all golfers.

Making Golf Fun For Kids

By Liz T Jones
The popularity of golf has never been higher than it is right now. More and more parents are trying to develop their kids into the next Tiger Woods or Michelle Wie. While this is a personal choice, golf pros and parents need to come up with ways to make teaching kids golf something fun.

Everyone has been there before, being a kid can be tough, and learning something needs to be fun. Golfing is no different. Teaching kids to golf is a task in itself, so making sure they are having fun will not only make it easier on the instructor, but it will also ensure that the kids are willing to stick with the program to become good golfers. There are so many aspects of golfing that need to be taught to kids. Things like:

• Full Swing
• Chipping
• Putting
• Rules
• Manners
• Safety

These things would be hard for an adult to get interested in for a long period of time, so imagine how a child would feel if it is not fun for them. So what are some things to do that will make teaching golf to kids fun? Try some of these drill suggestions:

Driving Range: Have the child pick a green or a target, as well as a club. Parent and youngster can go head-to-head to see who can get closest to the pin, with some sort of fun reward being made available after the competition is over.

Chipping Green: Most golfers just practice their chipping to become better. A child will get bored with this very easily. To make it more fun and more challenging, put a bag or other obstacle between the child and the green. This will teach them to properly chip around the obstacle.

Putting Games: Use colored tees and colored golf balls to set up some sort of putting obstacle course. Set a tee three feet from the hole. Continue setting tees farther away from the whole and in different places on the green. Have the child go around and make all the putts from each marked tee. To make this more fun, use a timer.

Group Instruction

Group instruction is an important aspect for keeping kids entertained while learning to play the game. Not only do the kids get to socialize with other peers and make new friends, but they will also feel more comfortable because it won’t seem like they are under so much one-on-one pressure from their instructor.

Group instruction incorporates games and drills that the entire group can learn together, making the golfing experience enjoyable and fun. Most kids will get their own bucket of used balls and be able to chip, putt and drive them at their own pace.

Parent To Child Interaction

While group instruction is helpful, a child still wants to be able to bond with a parent. It is important that they take a hands-on interest in the instruction process. Something as simple as hitting a bucket of used golf balls with a child or playing a round of golf with them can be very important when the child is debating whether or not they want to continue with lessons.

Getting kids excited about golf takes some planning. However, if a parent and instructor are willing to do things a little different and keep the kid’s attention, then kids will continue to be excited about the prospect of learning to play golf.

How To Handle Uphill And Downhill Lies On The Golf Course

By S. Pesavento

Many golfers are able to hit great shots on the driving range where the conditions are perfect and the ground is level. Once they get on the golf course, they may struggle a bit with the various lies that occur for different golf shots. It’s very helpful to spend enough time practicing out on the golf course besides just the driving range. On the range, it can be hard to simulate the actual shots that will need to be played out on the course.

When faced with an uphill or downhill lie, the most important thing is to tilt your shoulders so they match the slope as closely as possible. Your goal with your golf swing is to swing along the slope. If it’s an uphill lie, you tilt your shoulders so the right one is down and the left one is higher. As you take your club back, you’ll feel yourself drag the club back lower to the ground. As you come through impact, you’ll actually be swinging up through the ball otherwise your club can get stuck in the ground after impact.

On a downhill lie, you’ll tilt your shoulders so your right one is higher than your left. As you swing back, you’ll pick the club up slightly quicker. Through impact you want to feel your club chase down the slope a little more. This will ensure you are able to hit down and through the golf ball with good contact.

With an uphill lie, try and play the ball slightly more forward in your stance than normal. With a downhill lie, you should play the ball a bit more towards the back of your stance. This is important in order to catch the golf ball solidly with your clubface.

It can also help quite a bit if you widen your golf stance slightly on these uphill or downhill lies. Anytime you are not dealing with a level lie, it will help your golf swing if you can stay more balanced. It’s easier to get off balance with sloped lies, so widening your stance can assist in making better golf swings and hitting better golf shots.

Learning how to master uphill and downhill lies will help your golf game tremendously. Many golfers lose shots out on the golf course simply because they don’t know how to deal with these sloped lies properly. Get good at mastering different lies, and golf will become more enjoyable and rewarding.

Correct Attire for Playing Golf

By Susan P Denny

One of the main concerns when you set out to play a round of golf is choosing the right clothing which is both comfortable and functional. The last thing you want to do is wear clothing which restricts your movement. You also need to be aware of the golfing etiquette when it comes to what you should and shouldn’t wear onto the golf course. You certainly don’t wear beach gear to play golf, so check out the dress rules of the club beforehand.

Here’s a few tips to help you choose the right outfit which will keep you comfortable throughout your game.

* Pants/Trousers - AF nice pair of slacks, khakis or cotton blend pants are usually acceptable at most courses. Some courses will allow you to wear Bermuda or walking shorts with pockets, but a lot of private clubs will not. It is also considered as “bad form” to wear blue jeans on the course. Some golfers like to stand out by wearing bold colours and designs, or the classic below the knee Plus Fours, but most golfers prefer not to make a spectacle of themselves by dressing conservatively.

* Shirts - A classic polo shirt in cotton or wool blend, both short and long sleeved (depending on the weather), is considered the correct type of shirt to wear. Once again make sure that it is comfortable and easy to wear. It is not acceptable at the majority of clubs to wear a t-shirt or tank top, or to leave your shirt untucked and hanging outside the trousers.

* Footwear - It is far more practical to wear a proper pair of golf shoes which have the soft spikes on the soles to improve your footing. Casual shoes are comfortable, and although they are accepted on most golf courses, they are deemed not to be as functional. Many golfers today choose either a classic wing tip or saddle shoe, tennis-style or casual golf shoes, or even a pair of golf sandals. Wear a good pair of cotton socks and keep a spare pair in your golf bag.

* Headwear - Being out in the sun all day, it’s essential to wear some sort of head protection as long as it is not a distraction. Most golfers wear either a baseball style cap, a sun visor or a straw hat, as long as it’s not too large. Another advantage of wearing a hat is for protection if it starts to rain.

* Other Items - Keep a rain suit stored in your golf bag for rainy days. It isn’t a large item and may just prevent you from being soaked! A golfing glove to protect your swing hand from blisters is also a good idea. It will also help improve your grip.

The Masters Golf Tournament - The Facts

By Jeff Richmond
The Masters Golf Tournament is one of the four major golf tournaments in the professional golf world. The uniqueness of this tournament lies in the fact that it is always held at the Augusta National Golf Club, which was co-founded by the legendary Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts. If you want to actually be at the event to see the tournament, then there are only two options available to you. One is to qualify as a professional winning golfer - and the Masters has strict criteria for this qualification. The other is to pay a top price for a ticket from a ticket broker or from a scalper.

Qualifying: You have to win (or come in the top) at least one major tournament to get an invitation to the Masters Golf Tournament. The tournaments in this list include the

* U.S. Open
* British Open
* PGA Championship
* Players Championship
* Tour Championship
* Final Official PGA Tour Money List
* Final Official World Golf Ranking
* U.S. Amateur Championship
* British Amateur Championship
* U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship
* U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship

The people who do qualify will at the minimum get an invitation for one year and at the maximum for five. If you win the Masters you get a lifetime invitation.

Buying the practice ticket: Tickets to the Masters Golf Tournament are as tough to get as those of the Super Bowl. It is easier (and cheaper) to get tickets to the practice days. These are marginally less difficult to get because they are not tournament tickets.

You can actually apply to the Masters and hope to strike it lucky because tickets are sold in a kind of lottery system. Just fill in your application in June for the tournament in April - yes, you have to plan in advance. Or you can buy them from the ticketing sites or even eBay.

Buying the tournament ticket: But the magic of watching the pros playing during the Masters Tournament is unmatchable so if you are a golf aficionado and have the money to spare, then go for it. The earlier you book your tickets - these are available from various internet sites - the safer you’ll be. In the end tickets get sold out and if there are any left, they are exorbitantly priced.

You can even buy complete packages which include stay, breakfast and entry to the tournaments as well as some add-ons depending on which package is available and how much you want to spend.

Rucker singing for PGA Tour charity

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif–Darius Rucker has been involved with golf and charity for years, starting with his former band, Hootie and the Blowfish, staging a tournament with several PGA Tour players the Monday after the Masters.

So when the Tour asked him to get involved with its charity campaign, he didn’t hesitate.

In an agreement with record company Capitol Nashville, Rucker has produced a song named after the tour’s campaign– “Together, Anything’s Possible” – which can be downloaded from iTunes with all proceeds going to PGA Tour Charities.

“Golf is my thing. It’s the only real hobby I have,” Rucker said Wednesday at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, where he was invited to play in the celebrity shootout. “When the PGA Tour called and asked me to do a song that was a no-brainer for me. I was really honored that they would ask me to do it.

“I told them I would write as many songs as they needed until they got happy.”

How many songs did he end up writing?

“One,” he said with a laugh.

He said the Tour asked him to incorporate the slogan into the song, and Rucker decided to make it the title.

“I wanted to write a song that says what it’s about,” he said. “It’s about helping people. And I’m one of those cheesy, corny guys. I believe that if we get together as people, we can do anything.”

As for his golf?

Rucker says he plays off a 12 handicap, but it’s not from a lack of trying. He mostly plays at home in South Carolina, with Bull’s Bay his primary course. His best score was an even-par 72, which came with some clutch play. He was 1 under for his round until taking a double bogey on the 17th hole, only to make a long putt for birdie on the 18th.

His best memory of Pebble Beach is playing the 18th, no matter what score he makes.

“That hole is just magic for me,” he said. “I always say how much I love South Carolina and golfing in South Carolina. We got holes on the ocean, but nothing like that.”

HARRINGTON AND WEATHER: Padraig Harrington grew up in enough cold, windy conditions in Ireland that it shaped him as a player. He is comfortable taking more club for shorter shots, and is able to feel when weather requires various shots.

That helped him win his first major at the Carnoustie in the 2007 British Open.

Going out to No. 1 for the four-hole playoff, clouds began to gather and Harrington could feel the temperature drop. From 166 yards in the fairway, he opted for one more club and hit a 7-iron into 6 feet for birdie. Sergio Garcia came up well short and into a bunker, then failed to save par to fall two shots behind. The Spaniard never caught up.

“I took extra club and I was committed to it,” Harrington said. “I could see where someone might say, ‘You might need one extra club.’ But I knew it.”

STAR POWER: This is one of the PGA Tour events where the players aren’t always the biggest stars.

And it’s not just the antics of Bill Murray, George Lopez or Ray Romano, or football players such as Drew Brees and Tony Romo, all of whom will be featured prominently on the Saturday telecast. That’s a tradition at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Not to be ignored is the heavyweights from the financial world.

Paul Goydos was paired one year with the CEO of Hertz, and soon thereafter had a hat and bag deal with the car rental company. Phil Mickelson is playing with Tim Flynn, the chairman of KPMG, one of his sponsors.

“I don’t think anybody teeing off at the AT&T Pro-Am this week as an amateur has been dragged in off the street,” said Padraig Harrington, who is playing with Irish businessman J.P. McManus. “There are a lot of people who seriously achieved in their own field. A lot of times, it’s not the professional players who are the ones to be listened to. It’s the amateur players that are the ones to be listened to. There a lot of things to be gleaned in a week like this.”

Paul Goydos recalls his rookie year getting paired with Donald Trump. He asked Paul Spengler, now the executive vice president at Pebble Beach Co., why an unheralded rookie would be partners with someone like Trump.

“I said, ‘He should’ve been with Payne Stewart or something,”‘ Goydos said. “He said, ‘If we pair him with Payne Stewart, it’s Payne Stewart’s group. If we pair him with you, it’s Donald Trump’s group.”‘

And it was the Donald’s show. Trump made a hole-in-one on the 12th hole at Spyglass.

CAPTAIN LOVE: Two weeks into his new job as Ryder Cup captain, Davis Love III is not looking at any players with an eye toward the 2012 matches at Medinah. He’s still thinking only about his own game.

That doesn’t mean the Ryder Cup is forgotten by everyone.

“Trust me, the PGA of America is thinking about it,” Love said. “They think about it every day.”

Love said he already has received two e-mails related to the Ryder Cup. His wife, Robin, already has made decisions related to the Ryder Cup hotel and the clubhouse at Medinah.

Love said he has a meeting with the PGA of America to determine a timeline for the big decisions, but for now, it’s about golf. The only team he is interested in this year is the Presidents Cup team in Australia. Even so, it’s already been an eye-opener.

“Everybody says, ‘Why do they pick the captain so soon? Because there’s a lot to get done,” Love said. “Sure, 20 years ago you could do it in six months. But now it’s a big job.”

Bill Casper’s Win At The 1970 Masters Golf Tournament

The 1970 Masters golf tournament took place from April 9 to April 13 at Augusta National Golf Club. It was the 34th Masters Tournament, and 83 players entered the tournament. The field would eventually be narrowed down to 48 as 35 couldn’t make the cut at six-over-par (150). Billy Casper ended up winning the tournament.

The 1970 Masters would be the last Masters tournament that Henry Picard would register for. Picard was a leading PGA Tour player in the 1930s and won the fifth ever Masters tournament in 1938. He would withdraw from the 1970 tournament without finishing the first round.

Jack Nicklaus finished in eighth place in the tournament. The loss was part of his a rough stretch for Nicklaus, who had won seven majors going into the tournament including three Masters. His last major championship prior to the 1970 Masters was the 1967 U.S. Open and he did not win another major championship until the 1970 Open Championship.

Nicklaus wasn’t the only three-time Masters champion in the 1970 Masters. Sam Snead, who had won the tournament in 1949, 1952 and 1954, played in the tournament as a 68-year-old. He would finish in a tie for 23rd place.

Tom Watson made his Masters debut at the 1970 tournament. He played in the tournament as an amateur. He would end up missing the cut by three strokes. Watson would go on to win the Masters in 1977 and in 1981. He remains a solid competitor to this date as evidenced by his second place finish at the 2009 Open Championship as a 60-year-old.

Billy Casper and Gene Littler had a long history together. They were both born in San Diego almost exactly one year apart and grew up playing junior and amateur golf together. Consequently, they ended up becoming lifelong friends.

Casper and Littler had to put their friendship aside in the 1970 Masters tournament. The fourth round ended with the two future World Golf Hall of Famers tied at -9. They played each other in an 18-hole playoff. Casper got the better of Littler in the playoff by shooting a 69 to Littler’s 74. It was Casper’s first and only win at the Masters and his third and final major championship for his career. It was also his 45th win on the PGA Tour. He would go on to win six more PGA tournaments before retiring.

This wouldn’t be the last playoff for Littler at a major championship. Seven years later, he would enter a sudden-death playoff against Lanny Wadkins after both players shot a combined 282 at the 1977 PGA Championship. Unfortunately for Littler, the end result was the same as Wadkins ended up defeating him.

This would be the last time a Masters would use an 18-hole playoff system as a tiebreaker. In 1979, the format changed to sudden-death.
